Peer Pressure on the Web
added Tuesday July 26, 2011 1:21 pm

If you didn't hear the explosion, feel the shockwaves or even see the Google Plus Project (G+) coming on strong, then your internet must have been down for the past month. In a very short time (3 weeks to be exact) G+ reached 18 million users and in its first week alone contirbuted to 35% of all new links shared on Twitter.

By comparison, Facebook took 3 years to reach the same number of users, Netflix took 9 and the internet, the "WorldWideWeb" as we know it today, took 3 years when launched in 1991.

Maybe it's because G+ comes from an already established giant in Google rather than starting off as a small company; or maybe it really can be a successful suplement to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Skype.

Doubtful.

What is for certain, though, is that G+ will eventually change the web marketing world. As Google's own project, you can imagine the bias in favor of +1 Button social tick marks as opposed to those from Twitter, Facebook and other social networks. This will translate over to organic search results, showing pages with more +1s earlier in Google search results than websites with less or none.

Google's Plus Project is essentially an effort to join the social networking circle by creating its own. It will let you create as many circles of friends, family, coworkers, etc. as you wish and allow you to share and interact with each community separately. From comments to +1 clicks, you get to choose who can be in on specific interests.

The +1 button is similar to Facebook's "Like" button, but it allows you to bring your +1 to the attention of your selected peers as opposed to alerting only the person whose comment or shared item/post you "like"-ed; and +1 is everywhere.

You can find the +1 button on every post within Google Plus, on content publishers' websites and even sitting next to every single search result that Google brings up. Will this affect search engine ranking position (SERP) results and organig rankings?
Certainly.

And the more people you gather in you community, the more people you will impact with your +1 clicks; and the more people you impact the greater the effect on web marketing. Imagine the outcome if you were to engage every community you belong to with every connection you have through every email addres you have created.

That sort of volume of shared interest can certainly have a huge impact on anything you +1. Information will spread faster than you can imagine and word of mouth will prevail like never before.

As it always has been with internet technologies, early adoption is critical. You do not want to be left behind while everyone else gains a +1 on your website. Already 18M+ users have formed their social circles with G+ and with a name like Google backing it that user population is set to grow extremely fast.

Google felt the peer pressure form all the thriving social networks and has responded with +1. Now it looks to gain momentum and change everyone's social interaction platform, consequently changing the world of web marketing for good.

Businesses are too reliant on SERP to ignore the potential of G+. Will you join the circle and create your own?
